Funding and Sponsorship

Dear Friend,

No one can argue the influence of motion pictures on our collective consciousness.  After many years working in Hollywood and teaching university film classes, I finally came to the realization that we are sorely missing something in both our media production and our media studies…  an official classification titled Peace Films.

Since the Greater Dayton Area has proudly become a national locus for peace activity, in 2007 I proposed we initiate this new genre here, with the inaugural ScreenPeace public film series.  Last year, we featured Gandhi, Broken Arrow, Joyeux Noël, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Hero (Ying xion), and Woodstock, each of which offered a special perspective on “peace.” ScreenPeace 2008 will again offer famous and favorite major motion pictures PLUS…  This year we have added a contest for peace-themed films/videos produced by students in the Greater Miami Valley.

Last year’sScreenPeace film festival was a huge success, and with your financial support, we will raise even more money for the museum this year!  Our region’s celebrated 501(c)3 nonprofit Dayton International Peace Museum, located in the historic Pollack House in downtown Dayton, displays permanent and traveling exhibits, houses a library and research center, and includes both a Children’s Room and a Dayton Room.  The museum delivers conflict resolution and peace education programs for public and private schools, and features special educational, artistic, environmental, relational, and spiritual events on the many ways to effect peace.

ScreenPeace is a true community endeavor.  To permit everyone to participate, we have designed advertising opportunities ranging from $1000 down to $100; details are contained on the last page of this packet.  We calculate it will take $25,000 to ensure a high quality contest and film festival this year, so your support for this meaningful (and entertaining!) project is vital.  Please help inspire a culture of peace by being a part of ScreenPeace 2008.

With heartfelt appreciation,

Prof. Thomas Girvin
Founding Director
