ScreenPeace 2009 Student Film/Video Contest
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. If I shoot on film or videotape, may I submit my project in its original format?
A. No, you can shoot in any medium you like, but all submissions must be standard DVDs. See Contest pages on our website for local duplication services that will discount your transfer to DVD format.
Q. Who will be judging my work?
A. Our panel of judges, comprised of local filmmakers, critics and film educators, is listed on the ScreenPeace website Contest pages.
Q. I am a middle school student but my film partner isin high school. Which category do I compete in?
A. Whichever age range the elder student fits into is the category in which the film will be judged.
Q. Since our production is really a team project, do we all get prizes if we win?
A. Each student participant who submits an entry form will receive his/her own medal but cash prizes are given for the film as a whole; you will have to split the monies equitably between yourselves. Additional prizes may be given to individual students if this year’s sponsors so offer.
Q. We are students in the Miami Valley but our film crew is from church, not school. Is this okay?
A. Absolutely. In this case, if your film wins, your church/synagogue/mosque will receive the plaque that would otherwise be given to the school. Where a team project originates (place of worship, community center, summer camp, etc.) does not matter, so long as the named entrants are students in the Greater Miami Valley area.
Q. I am enrolled in college, but as a non-traditional student, i.e., I am significantly older than “college age.”
A. If you are formally enrolled in any local degree-granting institution, we welcome your submission.
Q. If I submit my film to ScreenPeace, may I still enter it into other contests?
A. Absolutely. There are links on our website to both this year’s Sundog and Ohio PBS student film contest.
Q. I am from the Miami Valley but presently go to school out of the area. Can I enter my film?
A. Sorry, for now this contest is open only to those students attending a school in the Greater Miami Valley. You are invited to submit your film for showing as part of our public screening and, should it be selected, you would receive an official Certificate of Appreciation, but it would not be eligible for a medal and cash award.
Q. I am out of school now but I would like to submit a film I made when I was a student. May I do so?
A. Per above, you are invited to submit your film for showing as part of our public screening and, should it be selected, you would receive an official Certificate of Appreciation, but only those films produced by students enrolled sometime between September 2008 and August 2009 are eligible for medals and cash awards.
Q. Why do I need to have my parent’s signature if I am under 18?”
A. Since you are granting control of your film entry to the Dayton International Peace Museum (DIPM), you need to sign legal permission. If you are under 18 years of age, you cannot give such permission. Your parent(s) or your legal guardian MUST sign the Entry Form or your entry will not be accepted.
Q. What if I don’t live with my parents and I am under 18?
A. The adult who is legally responsible for your care and welfare on a daily basis is qualified to sign your Entry Form and grant legal permission.
Q. What do you mean by “all entries must be original
productions?”
A. There can be nothing in your film (video or audio) that is copyrighted by someone else unless you provide written permission by the owner of the work via the Release forms provided… or is in the Public Domain.
Q. If my project wins, does that mean I must sign away all the film’s rights to the Dayton International Peace Museum?
A. You must give the DIPM rights to use your film in any way we like (including marketing DVDs) but you can go ahead and make whatever deal(s) you can with any other distribution entity; you just will not be able to offer anyone else exclusive rights to your movie.
Q. How can I view all the winning films?
A. The winners will all be screened for the public as the final event in this year’s ScreenPeace film festival on November 8th. We also hope to have a compilation DVD of all the winners available for sale at that time… and afterwards at the museum.
