Judging Criteria
Q. I am shooting on film, not videotape. May I submit my film in its original format?
A. No, you can shoot in any medium you like, but all submissions must be standard DVDs.
Q. Who will be judging my work?
A. Our panel of judges is comprised of local film critics and film educators.
Q. I am a middle school student but my film partner is in high school. Which category do I compete in?
A. Whichever age range the elder student fits into is the category in which the film will be judged.
Q. Since our production is really a team project, do we all get prizes if we win?
A. Each student who submits an entry form will receive his/her own award but cash prizes are given for the film as a whole; you will have to split the monies equitably between yourselves. Other prizes may be given to individual students if the sponsor so offers."
Q. We are students in the Miami Valley but our film crew is from church, not school. Is this okay?
A. Absolutely. In this case, if your film wins, your church will receive the plaque that would otherwise be given to the school. Where a team project originates (place of worship, community center, summer camp, etc.) does not matter, so long as the named entrants are students in the Greater Miami Valley area.
Q. I am from Dayton but presently go to school in Cincinnati. Can I enter my film?
A. Sorry, this year we must limit the contest to those students attending a school in the Greater Miami Valley.
Q. I am in college, but as a non-traditional student, i.e., I am significantly older than “college age.”
A. If you are formally enrolled in a local degree-granting institution, we welcome your submission.
Q. I am out of college now but I’d like to submit a film I made when I was a student. May I do so?
A. No, this contest is open only to students enrolled locally between September 2007 and August 2008.
Q. If I submit my film to ScreenPeace, may I still enter it into other contests?
A. Absolutely.
Q. Why do I need to have my parent's signature if Iam under 18?"
A. Since you are granting control of your film entry to the Dayton International Peace Museum, you need to sign legal permission. If you are under 18 years of age, you cannot give such permission. Your parent(s) or your legal guardian MUST sign the Entry Form or your entry will not be accepted.
Q. What if I don't live with my parents and I am under 18?
A. The adult who is legally responsible for your care and welfare on a daily basis is qualified to sign your Entry Form and grant legal permission.
Q. What do you mean by “all entries must be original productions?”
A. There can be nothing in your film that is copyrighted by someone else… unless you provide written permission by the owner of the work.
Q. If my project wins, does that mean I must sign away all the film’s rights to the Dayton International Peace Museum?
A. No, you must give the DIPM rights to use your film in any way we like (including marketing DVDs) but you maintain copyright. You can go ahead and make whatever deal(s) you can with any other distribution entity; you just will not be able to offer anyone exclusive rights to your movie.
Q. How can I view all the winning films?
A. The winners will all be screened for the public as the final event in this year’s ScreenPeace film festival on November 9th. We also hope to have a compilation DVD of all the winners available for sale at that time… and afterwards at the museum.
